Hand Therapy

Hand Therapy

Hand therapists at TRIA treat an extensive range of injuries and disabilities of the hand and arm including:

  • Fractures and dislocation
  • Arthritis
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome and other nerve compressions
  • Lacerations
  • Crush injuries
  • Tendon or nerve injuries and repairs
  • Sport injuries or repetitive stress injuries
  • Myofascial pain
  • Deformities of the hand, wrist or elbow

Working closely with hand surgeons and other orthopedic specialists, our hand therapists thoroughly assess the patient’s abilities and design an individualized treatment program that leads to restoration of optimal function. We also use specific protocol guidelines for many diagnoses to ensure best outcomes and continuity of care. Our outcomes meet or exceed nationally recognized standards for many diagnoses treated. Hand therapists at TRIA provide acute care for urgent needs, treatment for chronic problems, and post-operative management, providing therapy for all ages from children to adults.

Hand therapy treatments may include:

  • Custom fabricated static and dynamic splints
  • Therapeutic exercises (mobility and strength)
  • Edema control
  • Manual therapy
  • Patient education and training
  • Joint protection
  • Activity modification and ergonomics
  • Graded motor imagery
  • Neuromuscular re-education
  • Pain management
  • Sensory re-training
  • Wound care
  • Scar management

Our approach is hands-on, but we also employ electrical and thermal modalities to enhance and increase the effectiveness of treatment. These may include paraffin, Fluidotherapy™, whirlpool, ultrasound, neuromuscular electric stimulation, Graston® instruments and other therapeutic techniques.

Hand therapists at TRIA are occupational therapists who through continuing education and experience have established proficiency in treatment of hand and upper extremity diagnoses. Board Certified Hand Therapists (CHT) have meet professional test standards set by the Hand Therapy Certification Commission and have at least five years  of experience in treatment of upper extremity conditions.
