Our hips help support and stabilize us. Every time we walk, sit or turn our bodies, we’re using our hips. When they’re functioning well, it’s easy to forget just how much we rely on them. But when a fall, overuse or sprain hurts our hips, it can be painful just to get through our daily routine.

Starting treatment for hip pain

We recommend talking with a doctor about your hip pain as soon as you notice it’s affecting your daily life. The earlier you start treating hip conditions, the easier it is to recover.

Primary care doctors and orthopedists are able to examine your hip and help you get started with a treatment plan. In some cases, we may recommend talking to an orthopedic surgeon. Orthopedic surgeons are experts at knowing when surgery is needed to treat hip pain. However, we find that nonsurgical treatments are often the most effective course of treatment for many of our patients, and we’ll only guide you toward surgery when necessary.

Once you’re on a treatment plan, our team of physical therapists, physician assistants, sports medicine doctors and other hip experts will be there to help.

Treatment for hip conditions

No matter what your unique needs and treatment goals are, we’ll be by your side to help you get back to the activities you love. Treatments we commonly prescribe for hip pain include:

Nonsurgical treatment options

Nonsurgical treatments are usually the first course of treatment for a hip condition. After we examine your hip, we’ll work with you to create a treatment plan that fits your unique needs. Common nonsurgical treatments we prescribe include:

Physical therapy

Injuries, overuse and illness can weaken the muscles, cartilage, tendons and ligaments surrounding the hip. This weakness can cause pain and increase your risk of further injury.

Physical therapy is a type of treatment that strengthens your muscles and improves your flexibility through exercises, manual therapy and education. Our physical therapists will work with you to create a personalized exercise program that targets your hip, fits with your lifestyle and helps you meet your treatment goals.

We can help you recover no matter your activity level or athletic ability. We’ve helped patients who spend most of their days at a desk, patients who work in construction and other labor-intensive jobs, and professional athletes.

In fact, our team includes physical therapists who specialize in helping people get back to active lifestyles of all levels, from avid dog walkers to triathletes. Learn more about our sports medicine and women’s sports medicine programs to see how we can get you back to the game.

Medications and injections

Injuries and illnesses can cause inflammation of the hip and surrounding areas. Swelling caused by inflammation can press on nerve endings in the tissue, causing pain.Anti-inflammatory medicines can reduce inflammation, relieving nerve pressure and pain. We may also prescribe the supplement glucosamine to strengthen the cartilage around your joint.

In some cases, we might administer corticosteroids or other medications through a shot directly into your hip. This can provide short-term pain relief when other medications aren’t an option for you or effective at managing your pain.

Orthobiologics

TRIA is at the forefront of orthobiologics a type of treatment that uses substances naturally found in the body to reduce inflammation and promote healing.

Orthobiologic treatments can be used instead of surgery or in addition to surgery. While there are many different types of orthobiologic therapies, platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections are the most commonly used orthobiologic treatment.

Surgical treatment options

At TRIA, we’ll only guide you toward surgery when it’s the most effective treatment option for you. When surgery is the best way to treat your hip pain, we’ll answer all your questions so you feel prepared for the procedure and recovery. Hip surgeries we commonly perform include:

Hip arthroscopy

Hip arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure where we use an arthroscope, a small tube with a camera on the end, to guide us as we remove damaged tissue. Using the camera helps us make the smallest incisions possible, reducing your recovery time. We might recommend hip arthroscopy for conditions like hip labral tears and osteoarthritis.

Hip replacement surgery

When the hip is severely worn or damaged, hip replacement surgery can be the best treatment. Hip replacement surgery is a procedure where the damaged hip is replaced with an artificial one. This enables your hip to move smoothly, improving function while reducing pain.

Depending on your condition, we might recommend a partial hip replacement where we replace part of your hip while leaving the healthy tissue. Or we might recommend a total hip replacement where we replace the entire joint. We’ll talk with you about our recommendation, help you understand what to expect and answer all your questions.

When you have a hip replacement at TRIA, you’ll have the option to recover at home. In fact, the majority of our patients are able to go home the same day as their surgery and find this the most comfortable recovery option. When recovering at home isn’t the best choice for you, you have the option of staying at a hotel as part of our Hotel Recovery Program. This can be a more affordable and comfortable recovery experience for our patients.
