Surgical Skills Lab

Surgical Skills Lab

The TRIA Surgical Skills Lab, opened in 2006 and housed within TRIA Orthopedic Center in Bloomington, is a 2,400 square foot simulated operating room environment with staging and instrument processing areas. It can accommodate six whole body stations, eight arthroscopy or endoscopy stations and sawbones training. The lab was designed to meet the need for a cutting edge training facility that accommodates surgical procedure training and research and development, for surgeons, physicians, and health care professionals.

Education Labs

TRIA Fellowship

Our fellows get to experience, on average, 7 labs during their fellowship training, led by one of our Faculty.  We are one of the few facilities within the Midwest to offer in-house lab training.

University of Minnesota Orthopaedic Surgery Resident

We have a curriculum for the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th year residents to get them each into the lab for shoulder arthroscopy and knee arthroscopy.  This has been a great program to increase confidence and surgical autonomy.

Featured TED Talk

Dr. Marc Tompkins was involved in a TED talk discussing the possibilities of augmented reality in surgical care. He has been a pioneer in the use of augmented reality in orthopedic surgery. Working with the technology for over 4 years has provided a way to connect remotely with other doctors, including Dr. Hachach-Haram in order to test expanding the reach of physicians to improve patient care around the world. Augmented reality has also been a monumental tool in arthroscopic education for the residents in the University of Minnesota Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. You can view the talk here.

The possibilities of this technology are very exciting. Please feel free to contact us with questions.
